This programme is for the following year groups: ECE
Explore the ancestral house Hotunui, and discover more about wharenui and whare tūpuna, the magnificent buildings that form the centrepieces of marae. Discover what these whare mean to the people who care for them, and what the form and function of these rich repositories of tribal history represent.
Learn about the parts of a whare, investigate the notion of a whare as a storybook, and learn how carved, woven, and painted taonga can tell stories.
For ECE and early primary children
Hands-on activities and stories are a feature of this play-based session which allows engagement with the whare and a Te Ao Māori context. Children of diverse backgrounds can find their own connection to this very special ancestral house.
