The great human migration and settlement of the Pacific has been widely debated throughout history. Patterns we see across Pacific tātatau (tattoo) today carry the stories and histories of civilizations in the past.

With a focus on tātatau, explore how practices and traditions survived the journey of human settlement up to the period of Pacific migration to Aotearoa. Find out the meaning and symbolism behind tātatau history, patterns and practices. Compare tatau practices today and critique their effects in modern day society.

Learning Outcomes:

Learners will:

Understand the global history of tātatau and its placein the Pacific.

Know how cultural interactions have impacted traditional practices like tātatau over the years.

Do think critically about the past and construct narratives based on your understanding of cultural interactions.
