This programme is for the following year groups Years 4-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-13
This programme examines how Māori communities built thriving economies through exchange, resource management, and trade. Students explore concepts of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga and mana as economic principles, and how Māori adapted to new materials and markets with the arrival of Europeans. Older students investigate case studies such as northern iwi harbour control, large-scale trading ventures, and Māori entrepreneurship in the early 1800s.Through handling taonga and collaborative activities, learners gain insight into Māori economic systems grounded in community and sustainability.

- Recognise the values underpinning early Māori economies
- Identify how innovation supported adaptation and prosperity of hapū.
